Last week's water event has taken its toll on the emotions, lower backs, and pocketbooks of our community. It is extremely difficult to stay positive when you are tearing up carpet, carrying pictures soaked with sewage, tossing furniture that has proven it could float, or downing the drywall from the basement walls. However, I witnessed people helping people and demonstrating what it means to be a community. So much help that you could emotionally feel the strength and pride of Battle Creek as well as the heartache of those most impacted. Relentless work as young boys moved sandbags that were at least half their body weight. Big equipment from our farms cruised around town to help with the heavy lifting. Friends, neighbors, and sometimes even complete strangers didn't ask just started working. The road to repair is far from complete, but we can say with absolute certainty that Battle Creek Pride is as strong as ever. However, we can do without another test of our pride from mother nature.
