Parents / Guardians: Many people have brought concerns to our attention about the recent situations where the school has been put in ‘Hold’ status. First and foremost, we want to assure you all that the students are safe and protected within our building. Second, we will always make decisions that reflect the best interest of all students, which could include protecting them from seeing or being in the middle of situations that could scare or startle them. With that being said, we have different situations that can occur within a school system that could dictate different protocols being put in place throughout the regular school day. One of those protocols, ‘Hold’, has been used recently a couple times, within the elementary school. A ‘Hold’ situation could happen for a variety of reasons such as, but not limited to; a medical situation within the building, people doing walkthroughs within the building for a variety of reasons, a student or students struggling to meet expectations with access to the hallway(s), or even the need for clean-up in hallways where you don’t want students to be in the middle of the clean-up. A ‘Hold’ situation simply means closing the classroom door and continuing classes as normal. It is not a disruption of classroom activities. It is simply not having students leave the classroom, which could be for a variety of reasons that do not threaten the safety of students, but does require students to stay in their classrooms. Please see the attached Emergency Response Protocol (ERP) that Battle Creek Public Schools utilizes and if you have any further questions, please contact Mr. Childers, with the understanding that we have to follow FERPA and HIPAA regulations. With cold weather coming in the near future, here are a few notes to think about before sending your student(s) to school. Our school will utilize the app titled 'WeatherBug' as the official temperature check to determine whether we are inside or outside for arrival in the morning, as well as recesses throughout the day. On the app, it has two different features. One of those features is the Temperature and the other one is 'Feels Like'. The 'Feels Like' factors in windchill and is more of a real feel temperature, so that is the number we will utilize. If the 'Feels Like' temperature is 10 Degrees Fahrenheit or above, we will be OUTSIDE. If the 'Feels Like' temperature is 9 Degrees Fahrenheit or below, we will be INSIDE. The only exception to the 10 Degrees Fahrenheit threshold would be if it was raining or a really wet snow, which could possible bring everyone inside, as well. With that being said, please dress your children in layers when you send them to school. It is easy for them to remove layers if they get too warm throughout the day. Our breakfast doors open at 7:30am, so please try to not drop any students off much before that time, as they will be outside, unless the temperature threshold is met to come inside. Students not eating breakfast will be outside until 8:05am, which is when they come into the building to start classes for the day.
